AWorld of Warcraftfan recently pointed out that one of the lieutenants found in the Battle for Ashenvale PvP event inClassic Season of Discoveryis Larodar, a raid boss from Amirdrassil inDragonflight. This new NPC makes a clever connection betweenClassicand retailWorld of Warcraft, while also being a throwback toWarcraft 3.
The Season of Discovery is aWorld of Warcraft Classicexperience that introduces several new things to the retro servers. One of these features is the Battle for Ashenvale–anewWoW ClassicPvPvE eventthat gives reputation with the Warsong Gulch factions and offers unique rewards, including a mount players can use at level 25.

While participating in the Battle for Ashenvale,World of Warcraftfan and content creator MrGM noticed a fun connection toDragonflightandshared it on his personal Twitter. During the event, the Alliance and Horde each have three lieutenants and a Leader that the enemy force must defeat to win. One of the Alliance lieutenants is a Keeper of the Grove named Larodar–a nameDragonflightplayers may recognize as one of the bosses from Amirdrassil, the Dream’s Hope. Corrupted by the Druids of the Flame, Larodar is the fifth boss players face during the raid.
While Larodar had never appeared inWoWbeforeDragonflight, some players might recognize his name from even earlier inWarcrafthistory. Larodar was one of the random names players could get when recruiting Keeper of the Grove heroeswhile playing the Night Elf faction inWarcraft 3. In fact, all the lieutenants and leaders were taken from randomWarcraft 3hero names, proving the Classic Season of Mastery developers went far back in history to create these new NPCs–but only Larodar has appeared elsewhere inWorld of Warcraftbefore.

Fans got a kick out of this tie betweenClassicand retailWorld of Warcraft. Most agree the continuity made by introducing Larodar toClassicwas a clever move, and that using old random hero names for the Battle for Ashenvale bosses was a stroke of genius. They also appreciated the connection withDragonflight, and the fact that its own development team looked at the franchise’s history to create Larodar in the first place. While he may not drop theHearthstone toyhe does inDragonflight, Horde players can defeat Larodar in a very different way inClassic, while Alliance players can try to protect him from his grim fate.
