Hugh Jackman will help you access your memories for a price in the new trailer for theHBO Maxaction thrillerReminiscence.From theco-creator of HBO’sWestworldcomes the new sci-fi action thriller starring Jackman as a futuristic private investigator who specializes in accessing his client’s lost memories.
Per the officialReminiscencesynopsis, Jackman stars as Nick Bannister, whose life is changed forever when takes on a new client named Mae, played byMission: Impossible 7star Rebecca Ferguson. As Bannister attempt to learn the truth about Mae’s disappearance, a violent conspiracy emerges that poses the question of just how far one will go the hold onto their loved ones.

The trailer opens with a flooded, dystopian Miami, as Jackman’s soothing, hypnotic narration tells us that we’re “going on a journey, a journey through memory” and all we have to do is “follow his voice.” We then see Jackman’s character puts Mae in some kind of “memory machine” with the help of his assistant, played byWestworldandSolo: A Star Wars Storyalum Thandie Newton. From there, Bannister gives us a breakdown of the current state of the world: after the waters began to rise the population started to become nostalgic there was little to look forward to, so people became obsessed with the past. Sound familiar?
This sentiment is further reinforced when we see Bannister wake up in a state of panic, hooked up to his memory machine, as he states “nothing is more addictive than the past.” Then Mae mysteriously vanishes and Bannister becomes obsessed with finding her. Desperate for answers, Bannister is forced to navigate the underworld of dystopian Miami as he attempts to unravel a deadly conspiracy, and fight bad guys on rooftops.
Exciting stuff! Also, painfully relevant, as the topic of nostalgia and the past has been on everyone’s minds lately. From the Donald Trump presidency to theStar Warssequel trilogy, it seems like everyone is obsessed with returning to some kind of “mythic past” that may never have existed in the first place. It’s also an understandably relatable point of view, considering that we’re now in year two of a global pandemic and a lot of people are likely nostalgic for a pre-COVID-19 world. As with all good science fiction,Reminiscencelooks like it will use its futuristic setting to provide a relevant commentary on today’s society.
