Twitchstreaming has become an incredibly lucrative career choice for those who have found a way to excel at it, but this job comes with a wide variety of risks. Popular JapaneseTwitchstreamer Meowko has gained a lot of attention for streams featuring gameplay, hilarious costumes, and IRL streams set around Japan. However, she recently cut down on her IRL streams because a stalker has begun to make her feel unsafe.

Female celebrities often have to worry about stalkers invading their privacy and potentially becoming violent, and it seems that streamers are no exception.

In a short clip shared as part of her November 9 broadcast, Meowko explains to her over 222,000 followers why she is takinga break from IRL streaming. According to the streamer, she loves IRL streaming, but a recent experience with a stalker on the train has led her to fear for her life if she continues streaming outside. She stated that although the stalker did not do anything violent to her–or even speak to her–he stared at her from an uncomfortably close distance and the look in his eyes led her to believe she might be killed.

Meowko demonstrated why the stalker was giving her an impression of being uncomfortable and potentially dangerous by showing the stream how he looked at her–specifically, by getting out of her chair and shoving her face right up to the camera. The result certainly didn’t look like a casual glance on public transportation. Adding to the discomfort of the situation are the facts that Japan has historically had a lot of trouble with female commuters being sexually harassed on the train andfemale IRL streamers have been placed at serious riskin the past.

According to Meowko, the stalker followed her around until the streamer called the police the next day. This isn’t the first timelaw enforcement has gotten involved with Twitch, but this incident may have had Meowko’s safety riding on police cooperation. Fortunately, she appears to be all right for the moment, though fans may understand why she hasn’t been doing a lot of IRL streaming outside recently. However, Meowko is far from the only woman in theTwitchstreaming field who has felt endangered by stalkers over the years.
