Anyone who is familiar with theElder Scrollsfranchise is probably no stranger to the Dwemer race, which is something of an enigma in the game’s universe. Earlier this year, it was announced thattheElder Scrollslikely wouldn’t explain the mystery behind the Dwemer’s disappearance. In a recent interview with Game Informer, Zenimax Online Studios Creative Director Rich Lambert said thatElder Scrolls Onlineconsidered exploring the race, but the idea was nixed by Todd Howard.

In the interview, Lambert explained that an exploration of the Dwemer mystery was conceptualized for the world ofElder Scrolls Online, with plans to perhaps dive deeper into their enigmatic backstory. However, he said that Howard, Bethesda’s director and executive producer, reminded the team that this was not something that he wished to explore in the multiplayer game. This perhaps puts another nail in the coffin for any fans who are interested in unearthing more about them.

For those who don’t know, the Dwemer are an ancient race who vanished at one point in the story’s history. It’s never really been revealed how they disappeared. What’s generally left behind are tall tales about them, as well asDwemer scrap, which has also been a bit of a mysteryalthough one fan claims they know what it was used for. What Howard has seemingly done is close off the potential for any information about the race’s mysterious disappearance to be explored in the games.

The closest anyone comes to meetingthe Dwemer is inMorrowind, if they encounter an NPC by the name of Yagrum Bagarn. This character is looking into the mystery themselves, having allegedly survived the incident which caused the race to vanish forever. Many will likely remember him as the portly dweller with a large beard and mechanical spider legs in place of fleshy ones.

It is a bit of a shame that Howard seemed to veto the idea forElder Scrolls Online. The online version of theElder Scrollsseries is something of a hit, withElder Scrolls Onlinecoming toPS5 and Xbox Series X proper this year. While Howard had his reasons for nixing the idea, some fans might still be waiting in the wings in the hope that the mystery will be solved. However, some may be pleased with the idea that the fate of the Dwemer may always be left open to interpretation, with some no doubt reaching their own conclusions.

Elder Scrolls Online: Console Enhancedwill be available on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X starting July 12, 2025.
