Summary

Nintendo recently announcedthat a live action film based on the iconicLegend of Zeldafranchise is currently in production. Sony Pictures’ Avi Arad is set to co-produce alongside Shigeru Miyamoto, and Wes Ball is set to direct. This was no surprise for fans of the company, especially after the huge success of the animatedSuper Mario Brosmovie.

There are, however, a lot of questions that fans have been asking about the new Zelda movie. One of the most prominent involves which game the movie will be based on. TheLegend of Zeldafranchise has a huge array of titles to choose from, spanning a long but confusing timeline. Here are some of the games in the franchise that could result in a solid plot for the new movie.

Link fighting Ganon in the original Legend of Zelda game for NES

The plot of the first game in the franchise is quite bare bones. It is a basic “Damsel in Distress” story, in which Link has to save Princess Zelda from Ganon. While this may seem underwhelming at first, it could serve as an empty canvas if the creators handle it properly. The Super Mario Brosmovie managed to adapt the plot of the even simpler game into a decent, albeit brief, story.

Basing the live action Zelda movie on the original game gives Nintendo and Sony the potential to do pretty much anything they want, especially since fans aren’t too attached to these incarnations of the characters. The only real problem, though, is thatthe antagonist of this title is Beast Ganon. The villain of the film would have to be a CGI monster, meaning one less chance to cast a recognizable actor.

Ghirahim surprises Link with his tongue

The timeline ofThe Legend of Zeldaseries is quite widespread, and it is currently unknown if Nintendo and Sony plan to tackle it from the beginning. But, if they wish to do so,Skyward Swordis the only place they can begin. This game takes place at the very beginning of the Zelda timeline. It also explains the origins of many key aspects in the series, like Ganondorf, the Triforce, the Master Sword, and more.

Audiences may not be keen on having Demise as the antagonist instead of Ganon. However, the movie would benefit from featuring a characteras interestingasGhirahim, especially if a talented actor is cast in the role. Let’s just hope that Link doesn’t have to fight The Imprisoned three different times in the film.

The main cover for the Link’s Awakening remake on Switch

If the producers are looking for something a little more “out there,” then they should look no further thanLink’s Awakening, which was originally released for the Game Boy and was recently remade for the Nintendo Switch. This game is unique for this series, as it doesn’t feature Princess Zelda or Ganon. It doesn’t even take place in Hyrule.

The world ofLink’s Awakeningfeels surreal and dreamlike. That’s because the entire game takes place inside the dream of the Windfish, as revealed in one of the series’most emotional endings. This one may result in a more experimental film, but inthe right hands, it could end up being something special and unexpected.

Breath of the Wildisthe best-selling game in the Zelda series. With its open world and freedom of gameplay, this title changed the franchise forever. It would be a no-brainer to base the movie on what is arguably the most popular Zelda title of our time. And while this game’s plot left a lot to be desired, The Captured Memories that shows the backstory leading up to the main plot would be more enough to write a decent story.

The characters, from Link to Zelda and even the Champions, are the heart of this story, and it would be great to see them all together on screen. The most tempting part for Nintendo and Sony is, however, the fact that they already have the blueprint for an even bigger sequel if the first movie does well.Tears of the Kingdomafter all, was received even better than its predecessor.

Since its original release,Majora’s Maskhas gained an enormous cult following and is now regarded as one of the bestZeldagames ever made. LikeLink’s Awakening, this game is different from what fans are used to, as it features neither Princess Zelda nor Hyrule. The only difference is thatMajora’s Mask’sstoryis actually pretty darkin tone.

Trying to stop the countdown to the end of the world would make for a gripping narrative. Coupled with the game’s melancholic undertones its its memorable cast of colorful characters. A potentialMajora’s Maskmovie could end up having as big of an impact as the original game.

Ocarina of Timeis thequintessentialLegend of Zeldagame. The moment someone mentions this iconic franchise, this game is most likely the first that will come to mind. It changed not only the franchise but the gaming industry as a whole. And it was not just because of its mechanics and its 3D graphics, but also its legendary story.

The plot ofOcarina of Timemay seem simple nowadays, but it was extremely effective when it came out, and it still is to an extent. It tells the story of young Link traveling through time to free the Seven Sages, so they can defeat Ganondorf and save Princess Zelda. It’s filled to the brim with iconic moments, characters, and set pieces. It even features the character of Sheik, who could bring a shocking plot twist for some of the younger viewers.
