A gamer making their way through the PS4 remaster of Naughty Dog’s critically acclaimed action-adventure gameThe Last of Ushas shared a screenshot of an unusual bug in the game that left them with a recently deceased version of Ellie lying at their feet. The first entry in the franchise made the leap from consoles to computers earlier this year with the release of aPC port ofThe Last of Us Part 1, though the excitement for the game’s release was quickly overshadowed by the numerous technical problems present in the remake.
Originally released for Sony’s PlayStation 3 in 2013,The Last of Ushas been praised by players and critics alike for both its tense, stealth-focused gameplay and its grounded and mature narrative. In the decade since its initial launch,The Last of Ushas been remastered and remade for two subsequent generations of Sony consoles as well as receiving an adaptation into a critically acclaimed HBO series. The most recent revision to the fan-favorite game came in the form of a full remake, titledThe Last of Us Part 1, that was released for PlayStation 5 and PC. While the remake was praised for giving the now 10-year-old game an impressive graphical facelift, numerousbugs inThe Last of Us Part 1on PChave somewhat tarnished the title’s lofty legacy in the eyes of some gamers.

In a new post on the r/thelastofus, Redditor Idkwhattonameththis shared a screenshot of an unexpected and grisly bug they encountered when playing through the PS4 remaster ofThe Last of Us.The eerie screenshot shows Joel standing over the body of a seemingly lifeless Ellie sprawled out on the ground in front of him. Making the unusual bug all the more unsettling is the fact that another version of Ellie is standing beside him and staring down at her own corpse. While the terrifyingClickers inThe Last of Usare usually the source of the game’s most frightening moments, this screenshot shows that technical glitches can sometimes be equally eerie.
Several Redditors responding to the screenshot of the unusual bug found it amusing, with one response calling it “The dark version of the Spider-Man meme.” Another response poked fun at the title drop trope in games and movies, joking about a cliché-filled big screen version ofThe Last of Usthat ends with Ellie and Joel finding dozens of dead doppelgangers of themselves before Joel exclaims “Ellie, we’re the last of us!” Showing that the bug wasn’t an isolated incident, one Redditor linked to another post that featured a screenshot of an axe-wielding Joel standing over a seemingly decapitated Ellie.
In a game already filled with some truly terrifying moments, this unusual glitch manages to up the scare factor just a bit more. And unlike the comparatively benign, though still slightly creepy, dancing Joel bug inThe Last of Us Part 2,there appears to be no clear cause for the unexpected appearance of Ellie’s lifeless double.
The Last of Us Remasteredis available now on PlayStation 4.
