Summary
Jujutsu Kaisen’s second season isone of the most heartbreakingin anime, especially because the show is mostly action-oriented. Creator Gege Akutami does a wonderful job of making viewers fall in love with a character, adding significance to their story and then ripping them right out of it.
There are a ton of characters that died in Season 2 that most fans never would have seen coming. ButJujutsu Kaisenisn’t just heart-rending when a character dies; there are a wide range of events that took place during Season 2’s Shibuya Incident that could leave any fan tearful.

10Sukuna’s Domain Expansion
Brutality On A Massive Scale
Sukuna’s Domain Expansion, Malevelont Shrine, is one of thestrongest in the series. Where other characters need a smaller, more defined Domain, Sukuna can let his go wild in an up to 200-meter radius, a feat unprecedented by other sorcerers. While this normally wouldn’t be heartbreaking in the slightest (normally it would probably be jaw-dropping),Jujutsu Kaisendoes a great job of contextualizing his ability, showing all the innocent people it kills.
Sukuna unleashes his Domain to devastating effect, essentially leveling out a decent portion of Tokyo. There are rivers of blood that run beneath him as the ashes of innocents fall from the sky, a truly heartbreaking way to end a battle.

9Jogo Reunited With His Fellow Cursed Spirits
Even Villains Can Have Heartbreaking Moments
Jogo is one of thestrongest Cursed SpiritsinJujutsu Kaisen. He made his first appearance during the first season and even went hand-to-hand with Satoru Gojo, a feat not many Cursed Spirits can walk away from. Jogo’s primary goal was to change the places of Curses and humans in society, elevating his fellow Cursed Spirits.
When he gave Sukuna 10 of his own powerful fingers, he thought he had an ally. Ultimately, however, he just ended up being responsible for his own demise, dying at the hands of the King of Curses. Watching Jogo apologize to his friends in the afterlife was truly heartbreaking and was a surprising moment coming from such a prominent villain.

8Yuji’s Execution is Reinstated
Can Yuji Catch A Break?
The story ofJujutsu Kaisenstarts like any other; a boy finds a powerful cursed finger, eats it, and begins to harbor the soul and power of one of the most powerful and evil Curse Users in history, leading to his execution. Joking aside, that is actually how the story played out here.
Luckily Gojo paused his initial execution, but he’s gone now, and nobody’s around to save Itadori. Even worse, the heads of the Jujutsu world sent Yuta Okkotsu to execute Yuji, a foe so powerful that Itadori might actually die this time.

7Todo Loses An Arm
Boogie-Woogie Is Over
Most Sorcerers in Jujutsu Kaisen have their own special ability, and there might not be any more special than Aoi Todo’s Boogie Woogie. It’s a simple ability in which Todo can clap his hands and swap positions with anything he’s touched or imbued with his own cursed energy.
Mahito’s Domain Expansion, Self Embodiment of Perfection, reaches Todo and causes the genius fighter to cut off his own hand. While watching Todo lose Boogie Woogie in real time was devastating, fans did get a small redemption when they saw Todo imitate using Boogie Woogie, allowing Yuji to get a Black Flash in.

6Mechamaru’s Sacrifice
A Tragic End To A Hero’s Attempt to Save His Friends
Mechamaru was a tragic character from the beginning and found no respite from it inJujutsu Kaisen. He tricked Mahito and Pseudo-Geto into giving him a healthy body after giving out information as to his friend’s whereabouts but then attacked the pair shortly after.
It was revealed that Mechamaru, real name Kokichi Muta, really was on the protaganists' side the whole time. Unfortunately, it was too late as Mahito killed him in battle, leaving Kasumi and the rest of his friends with residual cursed energy that stuck around just long enough to say goodbye.

5Toji’s Initial Death
Could He Have Been Redeemed?
Toji Fushiguro is probably the most powerful character inJujutsu Kaisento never use Curses. While he was technically an antagonist sent to hunt the protagonists, there’s something about Toji that makes fans want to see him win.
Spoiler alert: He doesn’t. He dies at the hands of Gojo Satoru, but before he does, he has a revelation. He sees his son Megumi in flashbacks and tells Gojo where to find him, saving his son from the brutality of theclan that once abandoned him.

4The Assassination Of The Star Plasma Vessel
Curses Might Be Strong, But So Are Guns
The first episodes of Season 2 deal with the Star Plasma Vessel, a girl named Riko Amanai. She’s perfectly compatible with Tengen, the protector of the Jujutsu world, as a sort of sacrifice, giving her life to extend his. When Geto finally takes her to Tengen, she changes her mind and doesn’t want to go through with the merger.
Fans were thrilled to see Riko take her life into her own hands. Right as Riko turns to leave, a bullet crashes into her skull, killing her instantly. It’s one of the most jaw-dropping and heartbreaking moments in the series.

3Yuji Waking Up To Devastation
The Cons Of The King Of Curses Inhabiting Your Body
Throughout the series, there have been brief moments where Sukuna has taken over Yuji’s body. While these moments have all been very bad for the protagonists, none could have been worse than the Shibuya Incident. Sukuna ingested a whopping 10 fingers at once, giving him the time to wreak havoc on Tokyo.
Sukuna used his Domain Expansion to kill Mahoraga and didn’t care about the collateral it would cause. If anything, he was happy to kill innocent people just to make Yuji’s day that much worse. Yuji then woke up to a devastation unlike any other, brought upon by his own two hands.

2Nanami’s Death
No More Overtime, Nanami
Kento Nanami was anincredibly unique characterin the world ofJujutsu Kaisen. He’s a salaryman just doing his job, and he hates working overtime. He took Itadori under his wing and helped him a lot in incredibly key moments, making him a fan favorite.
Sayinghis death was heartbreakingis quite an understatement. He should’ve died when Jogo incinerated him, but Nanami kept going. He pushed and fought until he found himself surrounded by Cursed Spirits with Mahito behind him. With one last look, he passed the proverbial torch onto Yuji and was executed by Mahito.

1Kugisaki’s Death
One After Another For Yuji
Nobara Kugisaki is one of thebest-written femalesin all of anime. She’s strong, brave, and smart, giving her an independence Sakura from Naruto could learn from. While she does have a long list of amazing qualities, immortality isn’t one of them.
Kugisaki’s death late in Season 2 felt like one of the cheapest and cruelest. She was beating Mahito and even figured out the clone she was facing couldn’t use his all-powerful Idle Transfiguration technique when he quickly fled, swapped places with the other, and dealt a lethal blow to fans' favorite heroine.
