When embarking on a newPokemonjourney where several new entries are added to the Pokedex, it is only natural not to know the types of every Pokemon. While common sense can often help in identifying them, whether it’s a flame on its tail or leaves sprouting from a head, sometimes a player shouldn’t judge a book by its cover.

Many Pokemon designs are much harder to identify and sometimes have a few misleading features that could lead you to believe it’s a particular type when it actually belongs to an entirely different category. This is certainly the case with many debuting Pokemon inScarlet & Violet.
9Oinkologne
Oinkologne could be mistaken for being a Dark-type by its color and menacing-looking eyes, similar to those of other Dark-types such as Purrloin, Zorua, Nickit, and Alolan Meowth. While it may not look like a Normal-type, however, two-thirds of the attacks it naturally learns are Normal-type moves.
What adds more confusion to this Pokemon’s type is the Pokedex entry for the female version of Oinkologne, which mentions the Pokemon shrouding itself in a floral aroma that soothes the Pokemon around it, which would make Grass another suitable type.

8Espathra
If the wingless Doduo can be classed as a Flying-type, thenEspathra would surelymake the grade. This bird species is only a Psychic-type, despite clearly having wings and belonging to the Flying egg group when it comes to breeding.

What makes it more confusing is that it can naturally learn the same amount of Flying-type moves as it can Psychic. The reason for Espathra’s type, however, lies in its real-world inspiration, the ostrich, which cannot fly. Where this Pokemon lacks in aviation, it more than makes up with its land speed, with the Pokedex entry stating that Espathra can reach speeds of 120 mph, with base Speed stats that back the fact up.
7Armarouge and Ceruledge
Armarouge and Ceruledge, the two evolved forms of Charcadet are Fire/Psychic and Fire/Ghost-types. Without knowing the types of these Pokemon before going into battle, it would be easy tomistake them for Fighting-typesbecause of their humanoid designs, which are similar to other Fighting Pokemon such as Lucario, Blaziken, and the Machop evolution chain.
To get Armarouge, those playingPokemon Scarletwill have to use the Auspicious Armor item that can be traded for ten Bronzor Fragments from an NPC in Zapapico. Malicious Armor, which can be traded for Sinistea Chips from the same NPC in Pokemon Violet, is used to evolve Charcadet into Ceruledge.

6Paldean Wooper
Thenew Paldean Formscan also cause confusion, as many fans may know the types of their regular counterparts but not the new ones. For example, Paldean Wooper looks like it could be aGhost-type by the bonescoming out of its head, or maybe even a Dark-type by its color.
Paldean Wooper is actually a mono Poison-type Pokemon, which can be found in Area One of the South Province, which is one of the first areas that players will discover on their adventure. They often frequent watery areas of the map, so ponds and lakes are ideal locations to look for them.

5Iron Paradox Pokemon
While they may look like robots and even has a metal name, not all of the futuristic Iron ParadoxPokemon are Steel-types. Iron Bundle is Ice/Water, Iron Hands is Fighting/Electric, Iron Jugulis is Dark/Flying, Iron Moth is Fire/Poison, Iron Thorns is Rock/Electric, and Iron Valiant is a Fighting/Fairy-type.

Paradox Pokemon are a group of debuting Pokemon that came withScarlet & Violet.Pokemon Scarletincludes the ancient predecessors of certain Pokemon, while Violet has the futurist ‘Iron’ variations. All of these Pokemon are found inThe Great Crater of Paldea(Area Zero), which is unlocked after all three story paths have been completed.
4Bellibolt
If a player switches in their Electric-type Pokemon to battle against the aquatic-looking Bellibolt, they will be in for a literal shock, as Bellibolt is not a Water-type at all but a mono Electric. What further adds to the confusion is that the Pokedex states that Bellibolt is an EleFrog species, with many amphibians known for their love of water.
Players can get a Bellibolt by evolving their Tadbulb with a Thunder Stone, which explains the type this Pokemon belongs to. With that being said, Bellibolt does learn Watergun at level 11, further adding to the Pokemon’s contradiction.

3Toedscool and Toedscruel
Toedscool and Toedscruel may be Tentacool and Tentacruel’s distant relations, but their appearance and similar names are all they share. With no knowledge of Toedscool’s type when entering a battle, it would be understandable to think it is a Fairy-type by its sprite-like appearance.
Being based on mushrooms and looking menacing like their watery counterparts, Toedscool and Toedscruel could belong to the Poison-type category to fit in with the reputation of wild fungus. These Pokemon are actually Ground/Grass-types, which can learn powerful moves like Giga Drain, Earth Power, and Power Whip.

2Chi-Yu
Chi-Yu is one fish-like Pokemon that shouldn’t be left in a body of water, and that’s because it’s actually a Fire/Dark-type. Chi-Yu is one of the four Treasures of Ruin Legendary Pokemon that have a very specific way of being encountered. All of these Pokemon are Dark dual types, which is a result of their corruption by negative human emotion and the greed of an ancient Paldean king.

Chi-Yu can be summoned by traveling around the North Province and Tagtre, collecting all of the blue stakes scattered around. After that, all that’s left to do is enter the cave at Fury Falls and break the seal that contains Chi-Yu.
1Rellor
While Rellor’s Bug-type is understandable, its habit of rolling a giant ball of dirt would undoubtedly lead some trainers to believe that this Pokemon is also a Ground-type. Rellor can, however, learn three Ground moves, as well as theRock move Rollout, which is incredibly fitting.
While using thePokemon Scarlet & VioletLet’s Go feature, after taking 1000 steps with Rellor outside of its Pokeball, This Pokemon evolves into the Bug/Psychic-type Rabsca, which appears more like the type it belongs to.
Pokemon Scarlet & Violetis available on Nintendo Switch.
