Jenkins is no stranger to the pressure and demands that come with taking onRogue Squadronfrom her experience with directingWonder Woman. She sure likes to stay busy though, revealing to the Associated Press that she would love to tackle multiple films if she was allowed to. The responsibility that comes withtakingStar Wars: Rogue Squadronon is addressed by her. Yet, the fear is clearly not stopping her from doing the absolute best she can forRogue Squadronto flourish.
Jenkins is trying to somehow morph the past into the future, which is by far not the easiest task to take on. She must acknowledge the past and Jenkins wants this film to honorthe legacy of theRogue Squadronbookswhile also bringing fresh energy into the mix. Although it’s relieving to see Jenkins' strong intentions to honor the legacy, she has confirmed thatRogue Squadronwill not at all be an adaptation of the novels. Jenkins stated in the same interview, “The Michael Stackpole books and the video games, there’s an incredible history that’s really important to honor. And yet, it must be brought to a new age, because we have to tell a new story with it.”
TheRogue Squadronnovels by Michael A. Stackpole centered around the main character Wedge Antilles, who starts to recruit the most powerful and threatening pack of X-wing pilots. These chosen X-wing pilots are who make upthe titular team. Jenkins has confirmed that herStar Warsmovie will introduce a new generation of starfighter pilots. In her interview though, Jenkins made sure to mention that she is not discrediting and undermining the rich history and legacy from the novels and video games.
Fans may be left in the dark as to what they can expect from theRogue Squadronfilm. However, Jenkin’s public devotion to honoring the legacy proves that she might just be the only hero who is capable of doingtheStar Warsfranchisejustice, especially since most fans seem to agree the legacy was tarnished by the poorly-receivedThe Rise of Skywalker.
Star Wars: Rogue Squadronwill be in theaters on December 22nd, of 2023.
