Super Smash Bros. Ultimatehas finally had its newest character reveal with Steve fromMinecraftjoining the game’s massive roster. The announcement came from a recentSuper Smash Bros. UltimateDLC fighter reveallive stream hosted by the game’s director, Masahiro Sakurai.

Another livestream was hosted that showed off Steve’s entire move set and announced the next wave of amiibo figures including Banjo and Kazooie, Terry Bogard, and Byleth. For those who aren’t familiar with Byleth as a character, they are the player-controlled character from the hit Switch titleFire Emblem: Three Houses. InThree Houses, players can choose to control either a male or female version of Byleth throughout the game. As such, Sakurai made it so that players could choose a male or female Byleth inSmash Ultimateas well. Though someSmashfans weren’t happy with Byleth’sinclusion inSmash Ultimate, there’s no denying thatThree Housesperformed incredibly well for Nintendo.

Now, it seems thatFire Emblemfans may have a reason to be upset, as the game’s director has confirmed that only the male version of Byleth will receive an amiibo. It’s an interesting case, as there are twootherFire Emblemavatar protagonistsrepresentatives inUltimatein Robin and Corrin. Both of these characters allow players to pick female versions, however only Corrin was given a female amiibo alongside the male version. Only the male amiibo version of Robin was released, similar to Byleth now.

As mentioned above, moreSmash Ultimateamiibo figureswere confirmed alongside Byleth. Terry Bogard from theFatal Furyseries is getting an official amiibo alongside Rare’s Banjo and Kazooie. As Sakurai noted, it’s incredible to see Nintendo manufacture an official piece ofBanjo-Kazooiemerchandise. Those three amiibo are currently slated for release in 2021. Additionally, the previously announced Joker and Hero amiibo are now available for players to purchase.

While it’s great to see a high-quality figure for the male version of Byleth, it’s still fairly disappointing thatfemale Byleth won’t be getting an amiibo.Smash Ultimatehas gotten plenty of complaints in the past about skewed female representation in the game. Whether or not one personally agrees with that sentiment, a male-only amiibo variation of Byleth certainly doesn’t help the argument. Still, those who are looking forward to the male Byleth amiibo can expect him to release sometime next year.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimateis available now, exclusively on Nintendo Switch.
