In addition, if a player is willing to go slow and steady, the ability to break and place the blocks that make up the world allows for many challenges to be utterly circumvented. Many players find theyhave to make their own challenges inMinecraft, needing to create difficulty outside typical progression, though one official addition could make it challenging once again.
Lego Fortnite’s Weather Mechanics Could Work Well In Minecraft
LEGO Fortnitehas some mechanics related to weather and biomes thatMinecraftcould learn from. This primarily surrounds the temperature of different biomes and how players can, through a multitude of means, circumvent the barriers to exploration temperature poses.LEGO Fortnitesports many biomeswith extreme cold or extreme heat, prompting players to invest in different equipment to counter these challenges.
How Temperature Works In Lego Fortnite
One example of this isLEGO Fortnite’s Frostlands biome. Here, temperatures will drop to deadly lows—causing damage over time to those unprepared. A player can counter this by consuming spicy peppers and spicy burgers, crafting torches, or building a campfire. Spicy peppers (used to create spicy burgers) can only be found in the Dry Valley, another biome with extreme temperatures, so it’s not unlikely that players will have to rely on maintaining their stock of wood and occasionally stopping for warmth. This creates a need to prepare, an incentive to explore other biomes, and a sense that the Frostlands are a truly unique biome due to its environmental hazards.
Temperature And Weather Mechanics Could Improve Minecraft
There’s a similar mechanic to extreme cold inMinecraftwhen falling into powder snow. The player’s hearts turn blue, and they slowly take damage until they escape the snow. It’s a solid hazard, but it’s more of a nuisance than a precarity—something for clever players to use to their advantage. Something to the effect of powder snow doesn’t really existwithMinecraft’s current weather system; the worst weather can do to a player is keep undead creatures alive during rain or create a charged creeper in a thunderstorm (which is highly unlikely).
Whilst they don’t need to be constantly hazardous, some biomes inMinecraftcould do with new weather eventsthat test the player. An exceptional snowstorm could deal damage over time or even knock the player back as they try to walk forward. A period of grave heat in the desert could leave the player with burns long after they leave its sands, encumbering them with temporary vulnerability to damage. These should pass through armor, at least to some extent. Top-tier armor, especially if appropriately enchanted, should offer defence against these effects—but not immunity. Immunity could come from lower-tier armor, such as leather modified with a wool exterior. This would incentivize players to temporarily weaken their defense, opening them up to attacks from other creatures.
Moreover, this design would allow for more treasures to lie in specific biomes. If biomes have new dangers attached to them, they should naturally have more unique rewards. Players would be more likely to want to explore existing biomes and would think about how to prepare for the struggles attached.Mojang has already started this with 1.20’s archaeology, but there’s plenty of room to build on the concept.
