There are few series that have touched players' hearts the wayPokemonhas. Players have already hopped ontoNew Pokemon Snapwith delight and arerushing to increase their research levelsto experience more of the game.

Of course,Pokemonexists well beyond a single game and even beyond its main series at this point. It is practically ubiquitous, both within the video game community and without, which is why it’s surprising that, for many,Pokemonis still so fresh and new. Even where some find it growing stale, players are finding new ways to glean amusement from the series that has have nothing to do with the games.

Perhaps originating with Twitter user Adnelle, players have begun letting autocorrect name their Pokemon. Beginning with a Meowth renamed to Keith by a phone, it seems like a small thing, but it’s a trend that has caught on like wildfire. It’s certainly easier to let autocorrect try and renamePikachu than to try and localize the nameoneself, though some fans are trying that too. In the spirit of this happy mixup, one Redditor compiled a quick photoshop of several Pokemon done up to look like their autocorrected names.

Some of the names don’t fit at all, like Pessimism or Pandora, but others just seem like their additions make the Pokemon more powerful. A Gible with a Bible seems like a particularly small but formidable force. Wrestling Weevil seems natural enough that it could be a variant on the existing Pokemon. Warlord Wailord, in particular, looks pretty fun, as building a weapon platform on the Pokemon likeYu-Gi-Oh’s Fortress Whale would certainly make it more intimidating. It wouldn’t be the first timefans made an already enormous Pokemon even scarierby adding sharp objects.

Fans responded well to the mashups resulting from the autocorrect names. Polka Palkia in particular drew some praise, with one fan hinting that the accordion might have helpedPokemon Pearl’s sales. It may not bethe most realisticPokemoncreation, but imagining Palkia playing a Polka is enough to bring a smile to almost any face (any face that likes polka).

The naming trend is already on a craze within regularPokemongames and especially inPokemon GO, where players are sharing the names on Twitter. Hopefully, more of these mashups get made, and perhaps these frightful/adorable misnamedPokemonwill see their own fan game one day. Maybe they’ll evenget their own game cabinet likePokemonFire Red, but it’s probably best not to bet on it.
