For years, rumors have persisted that Rockstar Games plans on expandingGrand Theft Auto Onlinewith a Liberty City expansion, though that’s never come to pass. And with Rockstar Games finally confirmingGrand Theft Auto 6’s development, if there were ever plans for such a sizable expansion for the game, they have likely been shelved. While it remains unlikely that Liberty City will be added toGrand Theft Auto Online, an Easter egg relating to it has actually been discovered in the game.
As discovered by YouTubers GamingBGK and MrFraucheur,Grand Theft Auto Onlinehas a Liberty City Easter egg hiding in the Opium Nights Hotel. IfGrand Theft Auto Onlineplayers make their way to the Opium Nights Hotel at nighttime and look at its glass windows, they can actually see Liberty City in the reflection instead ofLos Santos. What’s bizarre is that this only applies to the PS4 and Xbox One versions of the game; this Easter egg is nowhere to be found in the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions ofGTA Online.

It’s possible that this Easter egg was also featured in the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions ofGrand Theft Auto Onlineas well, but fans have no way of checking anymore.Rockstar Games shut downGTA Onlinefor PS3 and Xbox 360late last year so that it could focus its efforts on supporting the newer versions of the popular online multiplayer game.
Some may take this as a sign that Rockstar Games is teasing the long-rumored Liberty City expansion forGrand Theft Auto Online, but since this is found in older versions of the game and not the newer releases, that seems highly unlikely. As previously mentioned,Grand Theft Auto 6is in developmentand so at this point it would seem almost counterproductive to launch such a sizable expansion.
Then again,Grand Theft Auto Onlineremains incredibly popular, and its unprecedented success is likely a big part of the reason why it’s taken so long to getGTA 6. WithGrand Theft Auto 6still years away from release, maybe Rockstar Games is planning on releasing aLiberty City expansion forGTA Onlineto bring back lapsed players. But even if that is in the works, it’s still unlikely that this Opium Nights Hotel Easter egg is meant to be teasing it.
As it stands, it seems that there’s a decent chanceGrand Theft Autoplayers could be making a return trip to Liberty City one way or another. Besides rumors of aGTA OnlineLiberty City expansion, there’s also been rumors thatGrand Theft Auto 6could feature Liberty City as one of multiple cities in the game. There’s also been talk of aGTA 4remaster, but nothing official has come out about that so far. Fans should take anyGTAleaks and rumors with a massive grain of salt and wait for more official information.
