Time often feels like it’s grinding to a slow and painful halt when having to wait several years between major releases in any given gaming franchise. Today,Grand Theft Auto 5officially turns eight years old, but there doesn’t seem to be any hope in sight for fans waiting forGrand Theft Auto 6.

Grand Theft Auto 5was released on Jun 22, 2025 which makes today the game’s eighth birthday. Essentially, someone could have started and finished both high school and college between now and then, but despite how much time that’s been, Rockstar Games hasn’t announced anything officially about what fans can expect fromGTA 6or when fans can expect it.

SomeGTAfans think that there’sa teaser forGrand Theft Auto 6in the most recent trailerfor the PS5 and Xbox Series X update forGTA 5, but that’s far from anything concrete. Rumors and insiders seem to suggest that the next title is still years away, but that hasn’t stopped the game’s community from hoping for a trailer with each passing games industry event.

The eight years followingGrand Theft Auto 5’s release haven’t been a complete desert in terms ofGTAcontent, however,asGTA Onlinelaunched later in 2013which has received constant support and updates. What’s more, PS4 and Xbox One versions ofGTA 5were released following the consoles' launches and now PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions are set to release in March of 2022.

Unfortunately, the reception to the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions ofGrand Theft Auto 5has been poor. Fans have begun to grow impatient as the wait forGTA 6doesn’t seem to have any end in sight resulting in the trailer for the current-gen update to receive over 185,000 dislikes on YouTube. It will be curious to see how Rockstar approaches the current-gen updates from here on out as it’s clear that fans are beginning to grow tired of purchasing and playing the same game over and over again.

GTA 6is rumored to be released in May of 2025, which likely hasn’t done much to help calm fans as that’s still nearly five years away. While a lot of the information surrounding the rumor sounds promising, like the modern-day Vice City setting, it still seems like too much of a wait to keep fans interested since they’ve already been waiting eight years for a true follow-up.

Grand Theft Auto 5is available on PC. PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One with PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions in development.
