This was revealed during a press conference taking place atFinal Fantasy 14’s London Fan Fest, where he was asked about his dream crossover. Yoshida answered that he’d be so happy to see acollaboration withDiablo, as he is a big Blizzard fan. He notes that getting a collaboration between it and Square Enix’s MMO would be a “nightmare,” not only because of the logistics behind getting it together, but also their wildly different aesthetics.
Yoshida described howDiablohas a lot of “spiky” things in it, which gives the games a more “hardcore” feeling to it as opposed toFinal Fantasy 14, especially in the ratings department. He notes that he wouldn’t want to disappoint either fanbase, saying it would be a difficult balancing act if Square Enix got the opportunity. He gave an example of how someDiablofans wouldn’t like a “softer” version of their franchise being represented in a crossover with14, so finding some sort of middle ground would be tough.
Despite this challenge, Yoshida admits that as a gamer and fan of other gaming franchises, it’s great to see whenvideo game crossovershappen. He states that if he and the developers were able to make a crossover that would make fans of bothFinal Fantasy 14andDiablohappy, then it’d create a lot of hype and excitement for the gaming industry as a whole. Yoshida’s love for Blizzard’s franchise goes deep, as he once stated he’d “drop everything” to work onDiablo 4.Fans can be assured if given the opportunity, Yoshida would do everything to make the crossover between the two the best it could be.
Final Fantasy 14is available now for PC, PS4, and PS5, with an Xbox Series X/S version launching in Spring 2024.
