What Is Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind About?

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mindfollows Joel Barish (Carrey) and Clementine Kruczynski (Winslet), two former lovers who undergo a procedure to erase each other from their memories. Sincethe film follows a non-linear narrativeand a great part of the story happens inside Joel’s mind, most of the scenes take place during different periods of time in the characters’ lives. The story begins with Joel, who skips work one day and, due to a strong and unexplainable desire, boards a train to Montauk, where he meets Clementine. They start talking, immediately form a connection, and decide to start going out.

It is then revealed that Joel and Clementine had a passionate relationship that ended badly, and Lacuna, a company that offers a procedure thaterases specific memories from a person’s mind, is introduced. Following a fight that leads to their breakup, Clementine undergoes this procedure to erase all her memories of Joel. When Joel sees Clementine at work and she doesn’t recognize him, he discovers that she erased him from her mind. He, heartbroken, decides to undergo the same procedure and erase Clementine from his own memory, since the pain of her not recognizing him is too much. Dr. Howard Mierzwiak (Tom Wilkinson) and his team perform the procedure on Joel at his home while he sleeps.

As the procedure unfolds within Joel’s mind,he revisits many of his memories, both good and bad, of his relationship with Clementine. Since his memories are being erased, many objects start disappearing from each of them. As the doctors pass from one memory to another, so they can follow the memories he has of Clementine, Joelstarts to live these moments once again, inside his mind. At the beginning, a lot of the memories involve them having discussions and getting into fights, but as he steps from one memory to another, he starts to see the good times they shared together, which leads him to realize that he doesn’t want the procedure or these nice memories gone.

During the procedure, Joel is able to hear some of the things the doctors are saying. One of them confesses that he is now dating Clementine and is impersonating Joel, because, although Clementine forgot about him, she loved how he used to be. Joel realizes that he has to wake up and stop the procedure. He attempts to communicate with the doctors, but sinceeverything is happening inside his head, he is unable to. He meets Clementine in one of their memories, and, in an attempt to save her from being erased, tries to hide her in some of the unrelated memories the doctors can’t find, such as those from his childhood.

How Does Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind End?

The doctors, however, manage to find them and complete the procedure, and Joel’s surroundings start crumbling down. In their final moments together, Joel and Clementine express their love and regret. Just before everything disappears, she asks him to meet her in Montauk. And then he wakes up. The audience is taken back to the beginning of the film. The procedure is done, and Joel can’t remember anything about Clementine or the procedure. He gets ready for work, and when he is at the train station, he suddenly feels that strong urge to go to Montauk for some reason.

After they meet on the train as shown in the beginning, Joel and Clementine are dating. They are still drawn to each other, they just can’t rememberthat they used to be lovers or that all the erasing happened. One of the employees from Lacuna sends every patient their personal file, which includes a recording of the patient explaining why they want their memories erased. Both Joel and Clementine receive these recordings and discover that they both had erased each other from their minds. They initially hesitate, but eventually decide to stay together. And the credits start to roll.

What Does This Ending Mean?

In the end, this ambiguous but hopeful conclusion leaves the couple with two possible outcomes, falling in love like they did the first time and making it work, or falling back into their old patterns. Their choice to stay together can be interpreted in various ways. There are some instances that hint thatthe couple may be stuck in a loopand will break up and then meet each other again. And again. And again. A more hopeful way to see their choice is that, although they hurt each other and made enough mistakes to want to have their memories erased, finding each other again made them hopeful that they can grow and learn from them this time around. Another interpretation can be that they chose to stay together knowing that they would meet the same end again, but this time aware that the good memories and journey itself would be worth it.

One of the most powerful themes ofEternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mindis that of soulmates; two people that, despite having their memories wiped, still unknowingly urge for each other and make choices that lead to them reuniting. While their future after the credits roll is uncertain, it almost feels certain that, if the inevitable happens, Joel and Clementine will find their way back to each other once again.
