Living Steel is a rare material inDiablo 4that players can use to summon Grigoire, The Galvanic Saint, an endgame boss that debuted during the Season of Blood. After the season, Grigoire became one of the game’s Lair Bosses. This boss drops exclusive Unique Items, as well as rewarding players who can defeat him with Shards of Agony - an important material for summoning the Echo of Duriel. However, getting enough Living Steel for a summon isn’t easy.

Luckily, the community has made extensive notes about where Living Steel drops, and how to farm it most efficiently inDiablo 4. Keep reading for information on which activities yield Living Steel, how much of it drops in each difficulty, and how many players need to summon Grigoire.

Updated on August 01, 2025, by Abigail Angell:With the release of the Vessel of Hatred expansion, Diablo 4 developers have made several changes to the endgame. Among these is an overhaul to Tortured Gifts in Helltides, which affects the best way to farm Living Steel. Instead of Tortured Gifts of Living Steel providing the best bang for your buck, Tortured Gifts of Mystery are now preferred for farming Living Steel.

Diablo 4: How to Get Living Steel

Living Steel drops from several endgame activities, such as Kurast Undercity (with appropriate offering) or Nightmare Dungeons once the player entersdifficulty Torment 1+. However, it drops most commonly fromTortured Gifts, chests that appear duringDiablo 4’s Helltide events. For the uninitiated, Helltides appear on the map once the player has beaten the campaign, and players will obtain Aberrant Cinders, a special currency, by defeating the monsters and completing the events within them. Those Aberrant Cinders are then used to open the Helltides Chests, which drop rare materials, powerful items, and boss-summoning materials such as Living Steel.

Tortured Gift Types With The Most Living Steel

There are several types of Tortured Gifts, each with its own loot table and Abberant Cinder cost. The best kind of Tortured Gift for farming Living Steel is theTortured Gift of Mysteries. These cost 250 Aberrant Cinders to open in Torment Difficulties and are quite rare, however, they drop 14 Living Steel and are well worth it whenever available. Other Helltide chests drop 1-2 Living Steel but are much more useful for farming Gear.

The Fastest Way To Farm Living Steel

Living Steel is farmed most quickly when the Helltides rise in Kehjistan,as this is the only region with three Tortured Gifts of Mystery chests instead of two. Popping into the Helltide to farm 600 Aberrant cinders and opening all three can net players 42 Living Steel in under an hour.

Diablo 4: What to Do With Living Steel

As previously noted, Living Steel is used tospawn Grigoire, The Galvanic Saint, and that can occur within theHall of the Penitent, a special Lair inDiablo 4’s Dry Steppesthat appears once players reach difficulty Torment 1+. While this Lair is quite easy to locate, as it is marked on the in-game map at all zoom levels, the map above will help players who have trouble finding it.

End-game bosses such as Grigoire drop more items the higher the World difficulty is set to. Players who want to maximize the drop chance of specific items should fight him on the highest comfortable difficulty.
