With the rise of online gaming, local co-op options have become fewer and farther between. There is still a huge market forlocal co-op gaming experiences, however, and various developers have stepped up to meet those demands. One such developer is 10tons, who recently brought itsDysmantlegame to consoles, and it’s something that local co-op gamers should definitely check out when they get the chance.

Dysmantleis a survival gameset on a large island that’s been ravaged by monsters. Two players can explore the island together, sharing upgrades and stats, while able to equip gear independently of each other. The game uses a top-down view for the most part, but the camera can be adjusted to give players a better look at whatever area they’re exploring. Players have to stay within the same camera shot, so it’s a little restrictive, but they’re given enough room to roam that it rarely becomes an issue.

Dysmantle’ssurvival game elementsaren’t hugely oppressive, so players don’t have to worry about eating regularly or drinking water. They will have to adjust what they’re wearing if they wind up in a place that’s too hot or too cold, but for the most part the gameplay revolves around smashing things to get crafting items to make new weapons that can in turn smash more things.

Dysmantledefinitely has someMinecraftinfluence, but it also takes some cues from theDark Soulsseries.Dysmantlehas a high-level of difficulty at first, with most monsters able to easily kill the player characters. As the game progresses,Dysmantleplayers will become significantly stronger and be able to turn the tables on their enemies, dispatching monsters with ease.

TheDark Soulsinfluence is also apparent with the way exploration works inDysmantle. There are campfires that function the same asDark Soulsbonfiresin that resting at them will respawn all the enemies the player has killed so far, sans bosses. Players have to make their way from one campfire to the next, looting for supplies, fighting monsters, opening up more of the map, and completing quests.

Dysmantleoffers around 40 to 50 hours of content for those that want to complete the game 100%, and with it priced at just $19.99, it’s a no-brainer for gamers looking for anew local co-op game to play. There are some glitches, and it can be rough around the edges at times, butDysmantleis overall a fun local co-op game that’s incredibly hard to put down.

Dysmantleis available for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X with a mobile version also in development. The Switch version launches March 31.
