Summary

With the release ofSuicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, many players seem to be losing a bit of interest in the DC brand. Just like with the DCEU, the projects that the studios have released recently have fallen flat with audiences. So, while there may be a couple of DC-related games on the horizon, some fans may be looking for something a bit different from the brand’s future.

It is no secret thatSuicide Squad: Kill the Justice Leaguefailed to impress audiences, and its first season did little to pull newcomers in. Additionally,Gotham Knightsalso struggled to gain any traction. At the same time, IPs likeStar Warsand Marvel seem to be treating their fans to a wide variety of unique experiences from many different studios. Even though not every title is on the same level, they have given fans even more unique adventures to embark on, and it might be time for DC to follow that example.

DC Might Want to Branch Out a Bit Within the Gaming Space

The DCEU showed a superhero brand that was not necessarily clicking with audiences in the way that the MCU was, and on the gaming side, it seems to have been dealing with that same thing. After the release ofBatman: Arkham Knightin 2015, there were very few major AAA DC titles coming out. Players were treated to Telltale’sBatmanseries, and Traveller’s Talesplayed around with the characters inLEGO DC Super-Villains, but outside of that, DC fans were mostly left with nothing to turn to.

However, that seems to be changing as Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment is releasing many new titles within the DC universe. One of the first major AAA experiences came in the form ofWB Games Montreal’sGotham Knights. Although that did give players a new Gotham City tale, it ended up being extremely controversial with the fanbase. So, all eyes were onSuicide Squad: Kill the Justice Leagueto see if it could right the ship, but that too failed to impress.

It Might Be Time to Let Other Studios Take the DC Brand for a Spin

The only other major upcoming DC games that players know about areTelltale’sThe Wolf Among Us 2and Monolith Production’sWonder Woman. While there are other titles likely in production, it does not feel like Warner Bros. is going all in on the brand right now. Yet, at the same time, both Marvel andStar Warsfans have so much content to look forward to.

Not only has Marvel seen the likes ofMarvel’s Spider-Man2 andFiraxis’Marvel’s Midnight Sunsrelease in the last couple of years, but it also has even more projects from Insomniac Games, Motive Studios, and Skydance New Meda on the horizon. Along with that,Star Warsfans recently gotStar Wars Jedi: SurvivorwhileStar Wars Outlawsis set to launch in a couple of months. Additionally, Respawn, Quantic Dream, and Skydance are also exploring this superhero universe.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League announces Lawless as Season 3 playable character

It seems like there isno shortage ofStar Warsor Marvel titles, and one of the big reasons for that is that the IPs are not tied down by certain studios. So many different teams and video game studios have been able to lend their expertise to these universes, which has led to a wide variety of different adventures for players to enjoy. That is something that DC has not been able to benefit from, as only Warner Bros. studios seem to be allowed to work within the universe. And because of that, there have been far fewer games with far less variety between them.

While the entire business model cannot change overnight, it would be nice if Warner Bros. could open the DC brand up a bit more. Even if not every game ends up being a success, letting more developers play around with these iconic characters could lead to so many unique experiences. Additionally, it could also mean fans are treated to even more titles at a faster rate, which would be great to see.
